George Ezra’s welcome return with ‘Don’t Matter Now’

It genuinely pains me a bit to know that it’s been over two whole years since George Ezra released his debut album, Wanted On Voyage, but thank god he’s back! ‘Don’t Matter Now’ is a splendid little number about how sometimes times are confusing, sometimes times are difficult but it’s alright. The song was Annie Mac’s Hottest Record during the week but now we also have the video to accompany the song.

The video directed by Marc Oller, is a technicolour affair that was shot on location in Barcelona with George and Mary the dog, who wears sunglasses (it’s just as cute as it sounds). There’s something lovely and wholesome about it, that makes it just what the doctor ordered.

George said about ‘Don’t Matter Now’: “I wrote ‘Don’t Matter Now’ to remind myself, primarily, that it’s okay to want to take yourself away from situations from time to time. It was one of the first new songs I wrote after ‘Wanted On Voyage’, all the way back in sunny 2015.

Events from back then can seem quite trivial at this point, but the song has made more sense to me as time has gone on. In time I realised that it wasn’t just me that was suffering from anxiety, it wasn’t just me that was confused, and that there’s no harm in not always understanding what’s going on in the world around you”.

All I can say is that its bloody lovely to have a bit of George Ezra back in my life and the sooner we get more songs the better. He hasn’t lost his charm and ‘Don’t Matter Now’ has built his sound into a bigger beast without taking away from his voice. Give ‘Don’t Matter Now’ a little listen here and keep an eye out for him over the summer.
