Sundara Karma have treated us to an extended version of their debut album, Youth Is Only Ever Fun In Retrospect due for release in July, giving us three extra songs (‘Explore’, ‘Lahkey’, and ‘Another Word For Beautiful’). They’ve been kind enough to drop ‘Explore’ a little early, and just in time for all this sunshine we’ve had up North. No Sundara Karma single is complete without a perfectly stylised video to match it though, right?
It’s set at a funeral but that by no means makes it somber, if anything it’s more interesting to see the juxtaposition of the upbeat song versus the traditional event. The traditions too are subverted from little things like the bright makeup Oscar Pollock sports right through to the frisky couple. Of course no Sundara Karma video would be complete without Oscar Pollock pulling shapes, this time in a suit Rick Astley would be proud of.
Director of ‘Explore’, Dan Brereton says: “Oscar mentioned wanting to do something based around a funeral, and I thought about how I could do it in a personal way, by having people and the band do things that are not expected of the occasion.
“I liked the idea of a funeral where people kiss, act nonplussed, bring their lizard and take selfies. We shot it in a great overgrown cemetery in the middle of London, with delusions of pere lachaise, and inspirations like Harold and Maude and Gates of Heaven.”
